A much richer and deeper black dye was at some point observed made from the oak apple or "gall-nut". The gall-nut is a small round tumor which grows on oak and also other kinds of trees. They range in sizing from two–5 cm, and are due to chemical substances injected because of the larva of specific styles of gall wasp inside the family Cynipidae
